The chemistry behind the tint
Nearly all cast dice are made from epoxy, a thermosetting polymer that cures into a rigid molecular network. That network is tough, but its bonds are not indifferent to light. UV photons carry enough energy to break some of them, and in ordinary air the broken sites react with oxygen — the general process polymer chemists call photodegradation. Among the reaction products are chromophores, fragments whose structure happens to absorb light at the blue end of the visible spectrum. Remove blue from the light a material reflects and what remains reads as yellow — which is exactly what you see in an epoxy die that has spent a summer on a sunny shelf. Because the reaction happens wherever light reaches, the tint develops through the outer bulk of the die, not as a film sitting on top. No amount of scrubbing removes it, because the color is the plastic now.
Two accelerants matter. The first is intensity and time: a die in direct sun takes in far more UV than one across the room from a window. The second is heat, which speeds nearly all chemistry, including this one — a windowsill in summer punishes resin twice, with radiation and temperature at once. Household LED lighting, by contrast, emits essentially no UV and is not a practical concern.

Yellowing is most visible where there is nothing else to look at. How to keep resin dice from yellowing: seven steps
- Store dice dark between sessions. An opaque dice bag or a lidded box blocks UV completely — the single highest-value habit. Our storage and display guide ranks the options.
- Keep display shelves out of direct sun. If you display your collection, choose a wall the sun never strikes directly. Indirect room light is a fraction of the exposure of a sunbeam.
- Stay away from windowsills. Glass does not block all UV, and the sill adds heat — the two accelerants in one spot.
- Mind heat sources. Radiators, vents, and parked cars in summer all speed the chemistry even without much light. A room-temperature drawer is ideal.
- Skip UV lamps and blacklights. Decorative blacklight displays look great with fluorescent dice, but they deliver exactly the wavelengths that drive photo-oxidation. Use them for the session, not for permanent display.
- Clean gently. Lukewarm water, a drop of mild soap, a soft cloth. Solvents such as acetone or strong alcohol can dull or craze a cast surface, and a hazy surface reads as aged even when the resin underneath is fine.
- Rotate your display. If one favorite d20 always sits in the brightest spot, it ages fastest. Swapping display pieces spreads the exposure and keeps the whole collection matched.
Can yellowed dice be restored?
Honestly: no, not properly. The tint is a chemical change distributed through the material, so it cannot be washed, wiped, or polished away — abrasive polishing enough to remove tinted material would soften the faces and inked numbers of a die and is not worth it. Peroxide-and-UV "retrobrighting" tricks from vintage-electronics restoration are formulated for a different plastic family and can bleach pigments or leave patchy results on cast epoxy. Treat yellowing as one-way and spend your effort on prevention. The consolation is that the damage is purely cosmetic: a yellowed die is chemically duller, not heavier on one side. It rolls exactly as fairly as the day it was poured.
If you want zero-maintenance materials
Some materials simply do not play this game. Injection-molded acrylic, though also a plastic, is markedly more UV-stable than epoxy — PMMA earns its living in outdoor glazing — so cheap acrylic sets tolerate sunny rooms that would amber a boutique pour. And of course none of this changes play: Dungeons & Dragons only asks that your die be fair, and a lovingly stored clear resin d20 and a sun-baked yellow one will both do their job.
